Unlike smartphones or traditional alarm clocks that rely solely on sound to wake you up, sunrise alarm clocks mimic the coming of dawn, with ever-increasing amounts of light.

Much like a traditional alarm clock, you can set a sunrise alarm clock to wake you at a specific time.

Some clocks allow you to control the amount of time that it takes to reach daylight, or maximum brightness. Others have a fixed amount of time, which typically ranges from 30 to 40 minutes.

Many sunrise alarm clocks include an audio component, too. In addition, you can opt for a model that includes a sunset simulator.

The use of timed light, such as that emitted by a sunrise alarm clock, has been shown to be an effective, noninvasive tool for improving the quality of sleep, mood, and well-being.

Research suggests that appropriately timed exposure to light can reset the sleep-wake cycle, helping people get up at a chosen time. Light therapy has also been shown to improve alertness and reduce grogginess during the day.

One small 2015 study on 17 men found that sunlight simulation may even reduce cardiovascular stress that can be caused by abrupt awakening.

Sunrise alarm clocks are designed to work with the body’s natural circadian rhythm. Your circadian rhythm is a type of internal clock, set on a 24-hour time frame. It regulates your sleep-wake cycle.

Circadian rhythm is influenced significantly by sunlight. When light enters the eye, it travels through the optic nerves to the hypothalamus, where circadian rhythm is regulated. That’s why you tend to wake up when it gets light outside and begin to feel sleepy once it gets dark.

External factors, such as artificial, electric light, and the blue light emitted by computer screens, can throw circadian rhythm and the sleep-wake cycle out of whack. This can make it harder to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake up at an appropriate time.

Sunrise alarm clocks simulate the ever-increasing amount of sunlight that occurs at dawn, and can be used to help you wake up gently and naturally.

Many sunrise alarm clocks also include sunset simulations, which can help you fall asleep.

But if a sunrise alarm clock isn’t enough to help you wake up on time and feel rested, you may want to try these tips or speak with your healthcare provider for advice.
